Do you have resources you can look through for others? Please send a note with as much detail as possible and I'll add it to this page... here's hoping we can make research a little easier on those who have limited access to it.  It is recommended that if a resource contains sufficient information that the researcher should attempt to purchase the resource from the OGS, Archives or publisher.

Dufferin County Archives has a lot of information.  I enjoy visiting this facility as the people there are great, including the archivist.  I visit the facility specifically for lookups.  While there, I can also look up BMD registration numbers, newspaper articles, cemetery transcriptions, family files, etc. Please visit their website for information on holdings, or contact them for more information.  The research fee is very reasonable and with such a knowledgeable archivist, you'll probably get more information if you pay for an hour of research, then you will get elsewhere.

Please make queries very specific as you can imagine what my 'to-do' list is like.  If you have a general query without specific information, you can pass it along, though it may take a long time to find that information out.

Please don't hesitate to contact the Elgin County Branch of the OGS for help in your research. "The Settlement of Huron County" by James Scott, 1966 - E-mail Jan
"This book is the story of how the County of Huron was settled...how an imaginative and unique plan was conceived, of the difficulties and successes which went into the making of a great county, and of the kind of men and women who were involved as, year after year, a vast primeval forest was transformed into rich, productive farmland dotted by large and small settlements which were centres of education, religion and commerce." (From the Prologue)
The first book to be written exclusively on this area, The Settlement of Huron County is a complete, factual, but warm and often fascinating account of the settlement of a portion of the Huron Tract in Upper Canada. James Scott's readable style brings to life Huron County's early pioneers, including John Galt, who first conceived the idea of settlement, a bustling Scot with "almost sublime confidence in himself," and the colourful Colonel Van Egmond, wealthiest landowner in the district who opened his heart and his purse to the settler but died a wretched man in prison following the Rebellion of 1837.  Other chapters recount the development of agriculture, the struggle for schools, detailed accounts of the growth of townships in the north and south, the towns of Goderich and Seaforth, Clinton, Wingham and Exeter, and the villages which began as crossroads.
"Huron County is today, one of the most self-sufficient areas to be found in the nation.  The Huron County pioneer always had his eye on the future, a future which the ensuing generations would build on a firm foundation of thrift and hard work.  When a visitor comes to Huron County, he feels he has come to a prosperous, progressive area, the kind of place where he would like to stay.  And this was precisely the dream of the founding fathers."
