"CAPTAIN LAWRENCE DEAD -- Mr. Orange Lawrence, one of Orangeville's best known citizens, died suddenly at his home on Amanda St. about 1.30 o'clock on Sunday morning. Friday evening the deceased had the misfortune to slip and fall on the sidewalk on South Broadway, fracturing a small bone in his left ankle. He was taken to his home where the fracture was set by Dr. Henry. Saturday night, apart from pain from the broken limb, he seemed in his usual health. Between one and two o'clock Sunday morning, Mrs. Lawrence heard him gasping and going to his bedside was horrified to find that he was dying. He had been subject to spells of heart weakness and his death was doubtless due to one of these attacks. The late Mr. Lawrence was 66 years of age and was a son of the late Orange Lawrence, who founded Orangeville and after whom the town was named. When a young man Mr. Lawrence studied law, but afterwards abandoned the idea of entering the profession. He took an active interest in military matters and at the time of the Fenian Raid was Captain of the Orangeville Militia Company. Captain Lawrence's Company was ordered to the front, but owing to the speedy termination of the Raid, only got as far as Toronto. The deceased is survived by a widow and a family of three sons and a daughter. The sons are Ferris Lawrence, of Weyburn, Sask., Albert Lawrence, Mulliken, Mich., and John Lawrence, Orangeville. Mrs. R. D. McBride, of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., is the only daughter. One brother, Ferris Lawrence, of Sheridan, Ont., and a sister, Mrs. (Dr.) Armstrong, of Toronto, survive. The funeral will be held from his late residence to the Forest Lawn Cemetery at 2.30 o'clock this afternoon."
